As virtual reality becomes more easily accessible, there is increasing engagement and competition in VR esports. VR – virtual reality creates a submersive digital environment,  that requires significant power to from your pc. We wanted to put Yoyotech PCs to the VR test, to see how the machines keep up with such a power-hungry form of gaming.

VR technology has come a long way since the 90’s when companies first started to experiment with consumer VR equipment. Nintendo was a big advocate for experimental gaming controllers with gear such as the NES Power Glove or the Zapper gun and they were one of if not the first commercial gaming companies to try their hand at VR when they released the ‘Virtual Boy’ in 1995.

It wasn’t until 2010 when Palmer Luckey would design the first prototype for the Oculus Rift, the headset that would shape the modern VR landscape and lead to things like the HTC Vive or the Playstation VR system.

VR was initially slow to engage the audience, but with improved technology, affordability and user experience, VR is finally coming into its own. We wanted to prove that you can have an excellent VR experience on a budget, so we wanted to steer clear of using our high-end systems with the newest release in VR technology. With this in mind, we set up a generation one HTC Vive using a 12^th gen Intel i5 processor and an RTX 3060 graphics card. We thought this would be the best test as it's one of the most affordable headsets you can get right now, simply because of its age, paired with the 3060 which is one of the most used GPUs right now, it was our best representation of the average gamer’s setup.

The game we decided to go with as a case study was the new Formula One 2022 release as its one of the newest games on the market with VR support so if people were to pick up a VR headset now, this game is an accurate representation of the games they’d be playing.

So, just how smooth was the VR experience?

During our extensive playtime (don’t you wish you had my job?!), we were averaging between 60 and 70 frames per second and we found this stayed consistent and didn’t drop down. The visuals were clear as we were able to enable high-quality graphical settings in-game without losing the smooth movement that makes VR such an enthralling immersive experience.
